The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is owned and operated by the Virginia Historical Society—a private, non-profit organization. The historical society is the oldest cultural organization in Virginia, and one of the oldest and most distinguished history organizations in the nation. For use in its state history museum and its renowned research library, the historical society cares for a collection of nearly nine million items representing the ever-evolving story of Virginia.
This display presents a selection of items related to young Virginians across the centuries and the stories that they tell.
About the Exhibition: History is often told by adults! These adults were not always the mature people you learn about in school—they were kids once, too. And, people of any age can make history. Commonwealth Kids looks at how children throughout Virginia’s history have experienced childhood based on their individual circumstances and the place and time in which they lived.
Square feet: 4,800
Number of artifacts: 50 historic Smithsonian and VMHC artifacts; 125 contemporary/reproduction objects
About the Exhibition: In addition to in-exhibition artifacts, audio/video presentations from the Smithsonian and The History Channel and immersive technologies such as touch-screen adventures take visitors beyond the exhibition.
About the Exhibition: This exhibition interprets 16,000 years of Virginia history and features more than 500 artifacts, maps, letters, and diaries. Objects in the exhibition are supplemented by images from the VMHC's collection, soundscapes, video, and digital interactives. Enjoy exploring the Story of Virginia.
